Henry James, OM (15 April 1843 – 28 February 1916) was an American-born writer, regarded as one of the key figures of 19th-century literary realism. He was the son of Henry James, Sr. and the brother of philosopher and psychologist William James and diarist Alice James. James alternated between America and Europe for the first 20 years of his life, after which he settled in England, becoming a British subject in 1915, one year before his death. He is primarily known for the series of novels in which he portrays the encounter of Americans with Europe and Europeans. His method of writing from the point of view of a character within a tale allows him to explore issues related to consciousness and perception, and his style in later works has been compared to impressionist painting. -wikipedia

I enjoyed reading this book. I read both volumes 1 & 2. it was a more challenging because of the language used by the author Henry James. Having said that I actually enjoyed the challenge of reading that book. it was well worth my time and effort.

The best word to describe this book? Ponderous. James's constant, incessant, mind-numbing digressions force you to look at each word, each phrase, then re-form them into coherent sentences. Gone is any pretense of losing yourself in a mental motion picture, which is the hallmark of great writing. Nothing happens in the book, certainly nothing "on-screen", but every nothing is examined in excruciating minutiae. Only sheer bloody mindedness made me complete this tome. Save yourself.
Perhaps I'm a Philistine, but I read this book in my attempt to read all of the Modern Library's Top 100 Novels of the 20th Century and I hated every second of it. It is virtually unreadable. I was only able to complete it by rotely forcing myself to read each word after the other. I could understand neither the characters, the plot, the setting, nor was I entirely certain that any of those simple components of crafting a story were even present. Perhaps this was a great novel in a different time and place, but from my present-day perspective I found it baffling and, frankly, incomprehensible.
This is an extremely difficult book to read. I've read Henry James's other books and this was unusual. If I hadn't got a fair way reading it, I would have stopped which I almost never do. It's an interesting story and well written of course, but he rambles on and on.
The moral compasses of British expatriates are skewed by money and mortality. Exceptional descriptions allow the reader to paint the pictures of each character and venue.
Great literary masterpiece by Henry James, for free!
A very strange story, very strange people. This was not bad, but I prefer The Golden Bowl. If you have limited time, I recommend The Golden Bowl, which is also available for free in edition. Same review posted for Volume I.
